Mr. Kenneth A. Barlow
Established in 2005 Mr. Kenneth A. Barlow of SC, the donor, and his sister, Barbara B. Overby created this scholarship in loving memory of their mother, Nina Elnora Gupton Barlow. She was born Aug 16, 1909 at home in rural Warren County, NC, and died in 2005 at 95. One of the five children of St. Elmo and Nannie Capps Gupton, she was married to Frank Barlow in 1932 until his death in 1977.
Of their 3 children, Ken the youngest, received his BSN and his MS (Accounting) at ECU. Elnora became a registered nurse in 1930 at Park View Hospital in Rocky Mount. Working at Park View until 1932, she then worked at Warren General for about 50 years (1951-1981).
One of the reasons that Ken had the first choice for the EG Barlow Scholarship recipients be chosen among applicants from their surrounding counties (Warren/Halifax, Vance/Franklin or Granville, Nash/Edgecombe and in that order) was because his mother provided free medical care and advice from her home to community members from all races living in Arcola, Essex, and Hollister for over 50 years. Her unselfish easing of others’ health burdens made a profound impression on her children. ECU’s College of Nursing is grateful Ken has honored his mother and her work with this scholarship which helps others desiring to make a hands-on difference to the general population’s health.
The purpose of this scholarship is to provide a general scholarship support to students who are enrolled full-time in the College of Nursing. First preference for this scholarship will be given to qualified students from Warren, Halifax, Vance, Franklin, Granville, Nash or Edgecombe counties (in that order) in North Carolina. If no one qualified, it will be awarded to students who otherwise qualified.
