The Christine Ward Chappell Memorial Scholarship Fund

Christine M. Ward was born in eastern North Carolina in 1904. Christine graduated and received her diploma from East Carolina Teacher’s College in 1924. Christine went on to teach in elementary education and was a beloved first grade teacher. She married and became Christine W. Chappell. Christine continued to love children and stressed the importance of education until the end of her life. She had a sense of adventure throughout her lifetime, and she had a strong Christian faith.

Gertrude (Trudy) Chappell Conrad, the daughter of Christine W. Chappell, was born in 1932 and was a lifelong learner until she died in 2022. Trudy received her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and her master’s degree from Appalachian State University in Library Science. She worked in the Charlotte Mecklenburg school system as a Media Specialist for over 20 years. She was a docent for 18 years at the NC Museum of History and was honored to receive the Docent Emeritus Award. Trudy continued to try new things during her lifetime and continued to have an adventurous spirit along with a strong Christian faith. Trudy loved the mysteries of life and experiences and maintained a great sense of humor.
