The Anja Sjostrom Memorial Scholarship in Coastal Studies

This scholarship provides support for students enrolled in the Integrated Coastal Sciences (ICS) PhD Program. Created in memory of the late ICS PhD student, Anja Sjostrom, this scholarship will be awarded to a student that demonstrates similar values and interests to Anja.

Inspired by her passion for nature and environmental conservation, Anja joined the ICS PhD program as a member of the very first cohort in 2019 where she bonded with her peers over their shared interest in science at the community level. It was important to Anja that all of the research she was conducting would eventually be communicated to the coastal communities she studied in an impactful way. Passionate about science communication, she believed in getting youth and women engaged in marine sciences and giving a voice in coastal studies to those who are traditionally underrepresented. In addition to her scientific research, Anja valued time spent in nature with the simple focus of enjoying and embracing the environment around her. Another passion of Anja’s was the blending art and science, which inspired much of the poetry she wrote. Saddened to have lost such a promising scientist and warm spirit, Integrated Coastal Programs created this scholarship to honor and celebrate Anja’s life.
